Basic Dart Throwing Techniques For the Game of Darts

1. Proper alignment.

The first step to a good throw is aligning your shoulder, elbow and hand in a straight line. All three should point at the board. Some dart throwers move their elbow slightly to the left or to the right depending on personal preference, but don’t go too far with this movement because it can develop into bad mechanics. You want to try to point your elbow at the dartboard and keep it as still as possible. Imagine that there’s a weight attached to your elbow stabilizing it and not allowing your elbow to move easily from side to side.

2. Steady dart throwing motion.

The ideal dart throwing motion is similar to how you would swing a hammer. Use your elbow, hand and wrist for speed and your shoulder for support. As you extend your arm your elbow should rise up and create the force needed to speed the dart towards the board.

3. Holding the dart.

Try not to point your darts down to the ground or hold the dart sideways at the beginning of your dart throw. To achieve a high level of skill at the game of darts all non-essential motions should be minimized or avoided. Keep your darts level and pointed directly at the dartboard.

4. Balanced stance.

A strong center of balance is very important to the dart throw. Whatever you do, make sure you use a balanced stance when throwing darts. Leaning or swaying is typically a bad idea because it makes the dartboard not only a small target, but a moving target. The most important part of the dart stance is finding a stance that is comfortable to you and your dart throwing style. If you are uncomfortable the chances are much better that you won’t shoot darts up to your potential.
