Playing the game of darts can be a good recreational activity, as well as a good sport provided an individual knows the technique of throwing darts.

To learn the technique of throwing darts, one should understand that the dart travels through a curve, and the speed with which the dart is thrown should continue the movement until it reaches and strikes the dartboard.

The throwing of darts is completed through five stages — aiming, backward move, and acceleration, release and a follow through. While taking e aim, the dart, the eye and the target have to be in a same line. Backward movement of the dart has to done slowly and by controlling the aim, which normally comes with practice. Acceleration, although not essential, has to be done very smoothly, allowing it to go along with the follow through. If the throwing technique is right, the proper release comes naturally. Follow through is keeping the same position for a while, even after release, that is to aim at the target.

While throwing a dart one should not move the whole body, but the movement should be restricted to the arm alone. The elbow should be in a fixed position while moving backward and should be alleviated during acceleration. Using the wrist to throw a dart does not really help, but many people believe that by using their wrist, they can gain the required speed. To get best results while throwing darts and to avoid the dart from wobbling, one should use standard form flights and middle length shafts. Moreover to get the best throw, the darts should not point too much upward or downward.

Dart games are usually played between two players or two teams. Each team can consist of two or more people. Although there have are different variations of the game which allow for more than two sides, these have not gained much popularity.

Generally, each player is allowed nine throws as a warmup before the beginning of a game. After the warm up, one person from each team throws a dart. This is to determine which team or person is eligible to take the first turn. The team that got the dart closest to the bull’s eye takes the first turn.

Each player, in his turn, is allowed to throw three darts. Two sets of darts are thrown — one by each team — before the darts are retrieved. If the thrower’s foot crosses over the line or if the person happens to trip over the oche (the throwing line, which a dart player stands behind to throw the darts) while releasing the dart, the throw does not count for any points and there may not be a re-throw.

After a player’s final throw, the dart must stay on the board for a minimum of five seconds for it to be counted. Also, a throw scores no points if the dart sticks into another dart or falls off the board.

In the basic method for play and scoring, the throws that are successful score in the following manner: (1) in the wedge — the amount posted on the outer ring; (2) the double ring (the outer, narrow ring) — twice the number hit; (3) the triple ring (the inner, narrow ring) — three times the number hit; (4) bull’s eye (outer bull) — twenty-five points; and (5) double bull’s eye (inner bull) — fifty points.

Of the games played by dart players around the world, the two most popular ones are “301” and “Cricket.” Of these, 301 is the easier, as, in this, each side begins the game with 301 points and throws in an effort to make their score zero. Cricket, a more complex game that requires more throwing skill and strategy, is played using mainly the numbers 15 through 20 and the bull’s eyes.

Each game is considered one leg, and when two out of three games are won, the match is considered won.

The sport of darts actually began as training for people who were interested in martial arts (archery). Darts itself began in Medieval England, and is still popular today. It has been said that darts were used in archery training because it helped with accuracy. They shortened the darts and had people throw them at the bottom of an empty wine barrel. It has been noted by historians that the use of the barrel lead to the development of the game of darts that we know today.

It was thought that darts developed into a sport in itself when soldiers being trained in archery took their shortened darts to local pubs and bars so they could refine their skills as well as exhibit their talents to the locals. When the bottom of the barrel proved to be inconvenient, someone created a cross-section of a moderate sized tree.

The new dart board, provided rings, and when it was dried out, the cracks provided even further segmentation. This cracked and dried board began to evolve into what we think of as the current dart board that we have today.

The game of darts itself soon spread and it was being played by old and young all over England. The rich and elite of the country were no different. They soon put their own stamp on the game. Darts can be traced back to the Pilgrims. It has been said that the game of darts was very popular on the Mayflower as it made its ocean crossing.

The rules of darts settled into what we know today at around 1900. The size of the board, throwing distance and even the size of the darts became standard. Many people enjoy the sport around the world. Today there are organized tournaments and organizations and leagues that specialize in the sport of darts. It is very popular and people make their living playing this sport all over the world.

We know that dart-like items have been used for hunting and warfare by early man, and indeed even today some tribes in South America, Africa and Asia continue to use blow darts for hunting purposes. However, in terms of the modern game of darts, the early history seems to have evolved from a game called “Puff and Dart”, where players took turns to fire a small sharpened dart at a paper or cork target.

Puff and Dart became a popular game in English inns, through history records an unfortunate incident of a man who sucked rather than blew - inhaling the dart into his body, and then dying a few days later. It’s not known whether this affected the popularity of Puff and Dart, but we do know that the game is no longer around today.

The next chapter in the history of Darts begins in the late 1870s, when the game “Dart and Target” (also known as Dartelle) appeared. Here, crude darts fashioned from dowel, with a pin stuck to one end and paper flights to the other, where thrown by hand into a piece of softwood board. In 1904, Dart and Target became one of several “Lawful Games on Licensed Premises”, and around 1925, brewers noticed the popularity of the game; and in response, they started to organise Dart and Target leagues.

The game received a huge publicity boost when the King and Queen of England visited a social club in Slough and casually took part in ad-hoc darts game, and in doing so “made the women of Britain darts-conscious” according to The Sunday Chronicle. The number of darts playing pubs went on to triple in the next two years.

Darts’ appeal to the general public piqued in the 80s and early 90s when the UK TV show ‘Bullseye’ aired. ‘Bullseye’ was a game show based around darts where contestants were paired with professional darts players, and also had to answer general knowledge questions themselves. The prizes ranged from kitchen appliances to holidays, cars, caravans and speedboats.

Since then, darts has spread across the UK and the rest of the world. It is even said that there are more pubs with dart boards in the centre of New York than there are in the centre of London. The popularity of darts has led to big international competitions and big prize money. The 2008 World Darts Championship will be held in Alexandra Palace in London, and fans wanting to see the top names in darts will find hotels in Kings Cross and Finsbury Park are conveniently located close to the event.

Though there have been some questions raised in Britain as to whether the presence of offensive weapons in a place full of drunk people is really a sensible idea, darts remains a popular game in pubs all around the world, and international competition continues to attract thousands of fans.
